The only Bangladesh batter to get going was Najmul Hassan Shanto. Bangladesh were all out for 164 when he was removed on 89 from 122 balls.

However, it was not an easy pursuit for Sri Lanka. They lost a number of wickets early in their innings before Samarawickrama and Asalanka put on a 78-run stand for the fourth wicket. Samarawickrama was dismissed for 54 off 77 balls.

Neeraj Chopra wins gold at the World Athletics Championships with an astounding 88.17 throw in the javelin final.

Neeraj Chopra won his maiden World Athletic Championships gold medal on Sunday night.

On Sunday, Neeraj Chopra made history by being the first Indian athlete to win a World Athletics Championships gold medal in the men's javelin throw final event in Budapest. Chopra's second try in the final saw him launch the javelin 88.17 meters, which remained the event record. Neeraj's performance was a huge improvement over his silver medal performance at the Worlds in 2022.

The defending Olympic gold medalist didn't get off to the best start in the final, reaching only 79m; Neeraj was plainly unhappy with the throw and decided not to register the score at all, stepping the line to force a foul. However, the Indian thrower reserved his best for the final; riding on a massive crowd support, Chopra took his run and began to rejoice even before the javelin could land.

Arshad Nadeem, Chopra's Pakistani compatriot, came second at 87.82m, just behind the Indian gold medalist. Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic won bronze in 86.67m.

Kishore Jena and DP Manu, the other two Indian javelin throwers in contention, also put forth strong performances despite failing to make the podium. Both throwers made the top eight and finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Jena recorded the highest registered throw of 84.77m, which was also his personal best, while Manu threw 84.14m.

Chopra, the current world number one in the javelin, earned the Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 but finished second at the worlds in Eugene last year, as Anderson Peters took the gold. Anju Bobby George, who won bronze in the women's long jump in 2003 in Paris, was the only other Indian to earn a medal at the worlds.

Neeraj required only one throw in the qualification round for the men's javelin final at the 2023 event to secure a spot in the event on Sunday. The Olympic champion had cleared 88.77m in his first attempt, gaining automatic qualification for the final. Following his foul in the first throw, Neeraj reached distances of 88.17m, 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m, and 83.98m.following his foul in the first throw in the final on Sunday.

Neeraj creates history.

In addition, India's great javelin thrower became only the third person in history to hold both the Olympic and World Championship titles in the sport, after the legendary Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic and Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway.

Zelezny won Olympic gold in 1992, 1996, and 2000, as well as World Championship gold in 1993, 1995, and 2001. Thorkildsen won gold medals in the 2008 Olympics and the 2009 World Championships.

Spain was awarded global champion in the Fifa Women's global Cup and defeated England 1-0.

Spain became the world champions after beating England 1-0 in the final of the Fifa Women's World Cup at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Sunday, August 20, 2023.

Spain Are Crowned The Winners Of The Fifa Women's World Cup After They Beat England 1-0 In The Final.

When Spain defeated England 1-0 in the Fifa Women's World Cup final at Stadium Australia in Sydney, England appeared to be a pale imitation of their finest selves. The Lionesses messed up at the grandest stage of them all, after being flawless throughout the tournament and without loosing even a single game, meaning that the long-awaited English desire for a World Cup triumph would remain for at least another three years.

Olga Carmona, the Spanish captain, scored in the 29th minute on a left-footed shot from the left-back, which proved to be the game-changer. Even though it was only her third international goal overall, it turned out to be her best one yet. Despite their best efforts, England could not compete with La Roja, who guided them throughout.

What do the numbers show?

Spain had 58% of the possession, 13 attempts, and five shots that were on goal, compared to England's eight attempts and three shoots that were on goal. Both teams received one yellow card each, although the Lionesses committed five offsides while Spain committed none. The team led by Jorge Vilda scored five corners, while Sarina Wiegman only managed to score two.

England women’s football team were out to complete the double of holding the European title (won Uefa Women’s Euro 2022 by beating Germany 2-1) as well as the world title. The long cry of, “It’s coming home” would once again remain unfulfilled. For their manager, it was once again a heartbreak as Wiegman lost in the final of 2019 as coach of the Netherlands as well. She was beaten by the USA.

Olympic shooters’ special connect with The Gita

Shooting is one of the oldest sports and has been part of the Olympic programme right from its first edition, held at Athens in 1896. Currently, among others, it includes pistol, rifle and shotgun events. A total of 15 events will be held in the next year’s Olympics at Paris.

In the pistol and rifle events, shots are fired at targets over a distance of 10, 25, or 50 metres; participants have to fire 60 shots in the qualification round, and the top few shooters enter the finals. Shotgun events entail shooting at flying clay birds and not static targets. What looks like a pure, docile sport with nothing much to be done, technically is an extremely difficult one, requiring peak fitness, endurance, strength – physically, and complete focus and meditative calmness – mentally. This is one sport that exemplifies the often-quoted Bhagwad Gita verse 2:47: ‘Thy right is to work only, but never to its fruits; let the fruit-of-action be not thy motive, nor let thy attachment be to inaction.’

What spectators generally see is the shooter taking an aim at the target, steadying himself and firing the shot. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Delve a little deeper into the physics behind it and you realise that the slightest degree of movement of the barrel at the moment of release of the shot gets amplified when the pellet/ bullet reaches the target, resulting in it deviating from the target’s perfect centre.

Now here comes the tricky part. While predictably, we would think of focusing on the target, much more important, or rather the only important thing is to keep the barrel dead straight, without even the slightest movement at the time of shot release. This is only possible when the shooter is focused on the fore and rear sights of the weapon; each weapon has sights which when aligned perfectly, meaning the barrel being dead straight, carry the shot to the target’s centre, and noton the target. Physics again tells us that a perfect trigger release with perfect alignment will automatically hit bullseye. So herein comes the Gita verse. The sole focus of the shooter has to be on the sights of the weapon, on the effort put in, and not the target, fruits of action, which automatically would result in a perfect shot. Any wavering of focus away from the sights and on the target, and the shooter is doomed. One point lost and he would tumble down the rankings. The shooting sport technique perfectly aligns with the purport of the verse.

While a lay spectator of the sport or a novice would think of the target, that is the result, the right way to fire a shot is focusing on the sight alignment, the effort. That’s what the Gita exults us to follow – Focus on efforts, not fruits of action.

Just imagine doing this precisely 60 times and later again in the finals and yet again one on one if there is a tie. What a Zen-like state top shooters must be achieving when participating in the sport, and later carrying that on in daily life. A mere focus on this one single verse and its genuine implementation would in itself be a big effort to achieve remarkable results in all of one’s endeavours
