When Spain defeated England 1-0 in the Fifa Women's World Cup final at Stadium Australia in Sydney, England appeared to be a pale imitation of their finest selves. The Lionesses messed up at the grandest stage of them all, after being flawless throughout the tournament and without loosing even a single game, meaning that the long-awaited English desire for a World Cup triumph would remain for at least another three years.
Olga Carmona, the Spanish captain, scored in the 29th minute on a left-footed shot from the left-back, which proved to be the game-changer. Even though it was only her third international goal overall, it turned out to be her best one yet. Despite their best efforts, England could not compete with La Roja, who guided them throughout.
